Part-Time Osgoode JD Research Assistant (Border Control & Racial Profiling) (F2021)

The Refugee Law Lab is looking to hire a part time Osgoode JD research assistant to help with a project about border control law and racial profiling in the Fall term. The project is a partnership between the Refugee Law Lab and the consumer protection organization Air Passenger Rights. It examines racial profiling in the implementation of electronic travel authorizations, which are documents that are required for most non-citizens to board planes destined for Canada. The research assistant will collect information from materials in publicly accessible court files relating to allegations of racial profiling against Hungarian Roma air passengers in the electronic travel authorization program (and in practices prior to the program’s inception). The research assistant will then prepare a legal research memo about that information.

Time: Flexible (approximately 5-10 hours per week from Nov 1 to Dec 1) (with the possibility of additional work in the winter term)

Location: Refugee Law Laboratory (Virtual)

Pay: $25/hr (inclusive of vacation pay)

Eligibility: Must be current Osgoode JD student (any year)

Expected tasks:

  • Meet with APR President to discuss work
  • Review court materials
  • Prepare legal research memoranda based on the court materials
  • Revise legal research memoranda based on feedback from APR President

Mandatory qualities sought:

  • Attention to detail
  • Strong legal writing skills

Qualities that are assets but are not required:

  • Interest in border control law (especially visas and other extraterritorial border control strategies)
  • Interest in anti-discrimination law and racial profiling
  • Completion of courses related to immigration law, refugee law, or anti-discrimination law
  • Prior work experience or experiential education in immigration law, refugee law, or anti-discrimination law
  • Applicants with lived experience with migration and applicants from equity seeking backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply
